Xbox outage locked players out of digital and disc games
A late July Xbox network failure blocked sign-in, store access, and entitlement checks, including some disc launches, before services were restored after a lengthy recovery.
Xbox suffered a major network outage that began the evening of July 26, 2026 and stretched through much of the following day. Players reported failed sign-ins, missing libraries, broken store purchases, and, in some cases, trouble launching disc games that still needed entitlement checks.
What Xbox said caused it
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet said a licensing service outside the core Xbox stack began failing. That broke sign-in paths and many entitlement checks used to list owned games and launch titles. Engineers isolated the bad path, shifted traffic to healthy systems, and restored service region by region.
Why it stung
Van Vliet called the incident unacceptable and promised clearer player communication plus better containment for this class of failure. For a platform selling Game Pass and always-online convenience, a licensing outage that can brick disc play is a trust problem as much as a tech one.
