Lightspeed LA cuts 80 roles while rebooting Last Sentinel
Tencent's Lightspeed LA said it is shifting direction on the open-world cyberpunk project Last Sentinel and laying off about 80 staff while keeping the studio open.
Lightspeed LA, the U.S. studio behind the Game Awards-teased sci-fi project Last Sentinel, is cutting roughly 80 roles while rebooting development. The studio said the shift aims to deliver the experience players expect, and that work on the game continues.
Project background
Lightspeed LA opened under Tencent's Lightspeed Games umbrella and revealed Last Sentinel in 2023 as a narrative AAA experience for PC and console. Performance director Troy Baker joined later. An internal review apparently found the current build short of the bar.
Tencent context
The cuts fit a broader pattern of Tencent pruning or closing Western incubation bets that have not yet proven commercial. Remaining open with a smaller team is survival mode, not a victory lap.
